Videos of the Week

You might have noticed that over the past few years there has been a call to Tax The Rich / Wealth Tax. It makes sense but our governments seem loath to do this.
Alberta has the lowest corporate tax in Canada – how has that helped us?
Governments are being heavily influenced by money for their own end.
There is a plutocratic class – whether old money and inherited influence (the Conservatives call them the Laurentine Elites), new billionaires, obscenely profitable industries (oil and gas, pharmaceutical, insurance, banks, etc), etc.
Our ‘one-vote’ is not having the respect it has in govenments when compared to the millions and billions of dollars to direct things to the benefit of a small portion of our society.
#TaxTheRich #WealthTax #WindfallTax #CloseTheLoopholes
Close the Loopholes refers to the Panana and the Pandora Papers. There are billions of Canadian dollrs going offshore without being taxed (tax evasion). Previous governments said they would tighten the holes so that people and corporations were not able to move their money about without paying the appropriate taxes owed. They haven’t. I wonder why.

December 10, Tuesday– Democracy Briefing: It’s Time to Get Organized and Push Back Online. This is a meeting for Americians but we can learn from their strategy.
“DemCast is holding an organizing call as it re-launches for expanded impact during Trump’s 2nd term.
Our intent is to build a network of social media accounts so massive that, when we push “go” on a network-wide campaign, video launch or priority call to action, the effort immediately trends across all social media platforms, garnering attention from legacy media and piercing the algorithmic bubbles that surround political communities.”
I attended this earlier this month and there was some good information in this presentation – which you could use anywhere. We need to start mobilizing against the right.

December 15th to 20th – Online Survey for Passenger Rail Service in Alberta: [The government of Alberta just put out a survey regarding railroads. I am a fan of railroads and public transportation systems. I used them extensively in Europe and the UK.
Unfortunately, I am skeptical about their motives. Plus, I don’t know when the survey was launched but it closes on December 20th, 2024.]
“Alberta’s Passenger Rail Master Plan
Alberta’s government recognizes the critical role of passenger rail in shaping the future of our rapidly growing province and is taking action to advance passenger rail in Alberta.
On April 29, 2024, the government announced the development of the Passenger Rail Master Plan along with a 15-year Delivery Plan for passenger rail services connected to municipal-led mass transit systems.
Alberta is growing at a rapid pace with more than 4.9 million people already calling it home. The province is expected to be home to almost 7.3 million people by 2051. We have one of the highest population growth rates in the country: as of October 2023, our population has grown by more than 4.3% year-over-year.
The government’s vision is for an Alberta passenger rail system that includes public and/or private involvement, with the following new components:

  • Commuter rail systems in the Calgary and Edmonton areas that connect surrounding communities (e.g. Airdrie, Okotoks) to downtown;
  • Rail systems that connect the Calgary International Airport to downtown Calgary and the Edmonton International Airport to downtown Edmonton;
  • Regional rail lines between Calgary/Edmonton and the Rocky Mountain parks (e.g. Canmore, Banff, Lake Louise, and/or Jasper);
  • A regional rail line between Calgary and Edmonton, with a local transit hub in Red Deer; and
  • Rail lines connecting regional communities (e.g. Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Grande Prairie, Fort McMurray) to Calgary and Edmonton.

The vision also includes integrating with existing and planned municipal-led light-rail transit (LRT) systems in Calgary and Edmonton with major stations that facilitate transfers for passengers between different rail lines as well as with buses, driving, and cycling.”

December 18th, Wednesday – 1-800-ON-HER-OWN: “is a cinematic musical road trip through the life of feminist singer-songwriter Ani DiFranco, founder of the first “woman-run non corporate queer-happy” record label Righteous Babe Records. Throughout the ride from her punk-folk past to her life today as activist, rock star and mother, she’s brutally honest, famously foul-mouthed and totally hilarious. Her daily challenges resonate as we reveal both an enduring, inspiring musical icon and a very relatable contemporary “everywoman” with her own epic fails and hard-won victories.
With a live music performance by Alex Dawkins at 6:30PM. Film at 7PM.”
Time: 6:30 pm for music
Location: Metro Cinema, 8712 109 Street
Tickets: Metro Cinema

RSVP for 2pm MT
RSVP for 6pm MT
RSVP for 10pm MT

December 18, Wednesday – International Migrants Day: “a powerful moment to unite and take action against exploitation and scapegoating. Migrants are not just workers – we are human beings who care for and build the communities around us. Yet, we are treated as disposable, denied rights and blamed for crises we did not create. It’s time to show everyone that nothing moves without migrants!
This year, International Migrants Alliance – Canada is calling for “A Day Without Migrants.” Migrant organizations, migrants and allies across the country are taking action to show that nothing moves without migrants!”
