August 25th, Sunday – Jane’s Bike for a Youth Climate Corps: “Edmonton Youth For Climate and @pathsforpeople are teaming up to lead a guided bike ride in Edmonton to explore ways that a Youth Climate Corps could benefit our city and help support community-centred projects and infrastructure.
This bike ride is inspired by American-Canadian author, journalist, and activist Jane Jacobs (1916-2006) who famously organized grassroots efforts to save lively neighbourhoods and to build more equitable environments for local communities for 40 years. Jane Walks are volunteer-led tours that happen around the world, often in May, to recognize Jacobs’ legacies and continue the mission of celebrating and advocating for our shared spaces. Jacobs believed that “cities have the capability of providing something for everybody, only because, and only when, they are created by everybody”. Our vision for a National Youth Climate Corps, similarly, sees the opportunities that community members must have to help build more green, safe, and equitable cities particularly in response to the impacts of the climate emergency.

Preparing for the threat of wildfire is a shared responsibility.
Community members, community leaders, industry and all levels of government have a responsibility to lessen the effects of wildfire. FireSmart is the implementation of both prevention and mitigation measures to reduce wildfire threat to Albertans and their communities while balancing the benefits of wildfire on the landscape.
The EFRS’ Public Education group will be hosting a FireSmart Canada Neighborhood Recognition Program (NRP) in the Strathcona Neighbourhood. While this first event is hosted at the Strathcona Community League, all of us can benefit from learning more, and bring our own notes back to our local community league. September 1st, Sunday – Alberta Day: I suspect that Danielle Smith will be on hand to open this event or at least a high ranking UCP official. September 2nd, Monday – 33rd Annual Labour Day BBQ: “For 33 years the Edmonton & District Labour Council has been holding a community BBQ in the heart of our city to celebrate the contributions of the working class in building the city & communities we hold so dear. This year is no different, come join us as we celebrate the past year and build the relationships that will sustain us for the year ahead.
Most of us believe in fairness. But despite our hard work, workers and our families are struggling to get ahead. We’re being ripped off by our bosses and ripped off at the grocery store, and the cost of a home is through the roof. We deserve better. Working people power Canada’s economy – we can’t let a wealthy few at the top enjoy all the benefits while the rest of us struggle.
We need to tell politicians to make rich corporations pay their fair share in taxes, instead of cutting health care, pensions, EI, and other programs we all depend on. It’s time for workers to come together to demand a better deal.
By working together with unions, workers can push decision-makers to support workers and hold wealthy corporations to account. We can build a better, fairer future where working families thrive. Let’s make it happen, now.”
Time: 11:30 am to 3:30 pm
Location: Giovanni Caboto Park, 9403 109A Ave

September 3rd, Tuesday – Earth’s General Store’s 33rd Anniversary: What can I say. I opened this store on September 3rd, 1991 so I am posting this on this activist page since it has over the years supported that community, introduced people to refilling, spread the gospel of Fair Trade and Organic, been a community hub, etc.
Come and share your stories.
Time: 1pm to 7pm
Location: Earth’s General Store, 9605 – 82nd Avenue

September 5th, Thursday – National Day of Action: CRA Stop Subsidizing Genocide: Tell CRA to revoke Zionist organizations’ charitable status.
September 5 is the annual United Nations International Day of Charity. This year is a cross-country national day of action to pressure the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) to revoke charitable status of organizations that have violated CRA rules by assisting illegal israeli settlements, racist israeli organizations, and israel’s military.
The CRA recently revoked charitable status for two Zionist organizations, the Jewish National Fund and the Ne’eman Foundation. This is fantastic, but the CRA needs to go further. Over 200 registered canadian charities funnel over a quarter billion dollars in subsidized donations to Israel annually – over 10% of receipted Canadian donations go to Israel. Detailed complaints have been submitted asking the CRA to revoke status of more than a dozen that are clearly violating CRA rules, including the Canadian Zionist Cultural Association, Mizrachi Canada, Charity Partners Canada, Jerusalem Heritage Foundation of Canada, and the HESEG Foundation.
Read more about your tax dollars supporting genocide, war crimes, and the occupation here: https://www.justpeaceadvocates.ca/release-cra-exposes-canadian-subsidies-for-genocide/
A coalition of anti-Zionist Jews is organizing an info picket outside the Canada Place building downtown, 9700 Jasper Avenue, to raise awareness about how Canadian Zionist charities fund israel’s violence. We will also encourage the public to increase pressure through contacting the CRA by letters, emails and phone calls. We encourage supporters to come be part of the action.”
[You do not need to be a Jew or Palestinian to support this action. You could be an average Canadian like me who doesn’t like organizations that use the CRA’s charitable status for uses that we would not condone as being ‘charitable’ – additional comment by Michael]
Time: 4 – 5 pm
Location: Canada Place building, 9700 Jasper Avenue

September 6th-8th – Climate Leadership Program: “Indigenous Climate Action is pleased to announce that we are now accepting applications for the latest cohort of our Climate Leadership Program!

Fundamentally, the CLP serves to facilitate capacity-building, information and resource exchanges, and advocacy among Indigenous leaders, communities and beyond.”

September 14th, Saturday – Health Care In Action – Healthcare Days of Action: “CUPE Alberta is inviting you to join our members in the healthcare sector in support and solidarity at this critical moment for the sector in the province.

Now more than ever, we need your support.”

Location: Giovanni Caboto Park, 109a Avenue and 95th Street (acroos the street from the Intalian Centre)
RSVP: Not required but nice to let them know you are coming – Waging Ahead

September 14th Saturday – Say No to Racism! Yes to Immigrant Justice!: “Right-wing politicians are scapegoating immigrants for the housing and affordability crisis, diverting attention from corporate greed and government policy failures. All workers, including migrants and immigrants, are suffering from decades of cuts to healthcare, housing, education, and social services. The elite want us divided—citizen against newcomer—so we don’t unite against billionaires, landlords, and climate criminals profiting from our crisis. The federal Liberals are mirroring Conservative tactics, shutting down immigration avenues. Regularization—permanent resident status for undocumented people—was promised in December 2021 but still has not been delivered, while migrants remain underpaid, exploited, and excluded.
We must act now to halt the tide of xenophobia before it entrenches further, as it has in the United States and Europe. Those of us who believe in fairness and justice must flood the streets in the thousands, rejecting immigrant scapegoating and distraction.”
Time: 1pm
Location: Federal Building – I think someone made a mistake on the location they have listed on the RSVP and the poster. I think they mean the Violet King Henry Plaza on the west side of the old ederal building (now called Queen Elizabeth II Building.
RSVP: Migrant Rights Network (not really necessary but it lets them know how many people to expect)

September 17th, Tuesday – Street Mural Day of Action in support of a Youth Climate Corps: “To wrap up this summer of unnatural disasters, we’re planning a day of action on September 17 across the country to show MPs the power and vision of a Youth Climate Corps.
We’ll be getting together in our communities to paint ground murals, share information, recruit new organizers, and send MPs back to Parliament with a mandate to fight for a YCC.
Interested in hosting a day of action in your community? Or looking to join one already planned? Follow the link below and get involved!”

September 20th, Friday – Global Climate Strike: “Plan now for the Global Day of Action coinciding with the UN Summit of the Future on September 22-23. Given summer break, Canada should consider a national strike on Friday, September 20, 2024. Climate strikes, especially with a clear message, influence public opinion. Authentic voices of young women aged 10-14 can sway conservative-minded dads. Stay focused, collaborate, keep messages positive, enjoy the process, avoid preachiness, use evidence, and appeal to conservative voters. Form a planning committee that uses best organizational practices that include roles with responsibitities, and timelines. Reach out to relevant groups as soon as you can to plan an audicious, bold and collaborative event.” Fridays for Future Canada
Edmonton Youth for Climate are working on the details for an event to happen on this date. I will update this page as information becomes available.
