Tough one. The vast majority of media in Canada has been impacted by the Conservative/Republican/Right-wing narrative. It does not have to be overt like Fox News or Rebel Media but more subtle. A breakdown of their social contract.
Caution about the amount of information that you consume. The more you consume and become aware of how bad things are the more impact it will have on your mental and spiritual state. Knowledge and awareness are important to gain but you do not need to be an expert to act – to become an activist for those issues that you feel strongly about.
You need to take care of yourself – spend time in nature, with friends, etc. but remember – actions is the antidote of despair.
Knowledge compels a person to take action – if not, it will each away at your soul because you will not be in alignment. You and your stated beliefs/values.
These are a selection of information that I trust, at least more than the regular media platforms. You need to be prudent and suspect of the information that you are consuming. Who is it coming from? Who are they? Does it make sense? Is it supported by science? Who owns the source?
Yes, you will start moving away from some sense of comfort – your comfort bubble, but if things were going so well for you, your community, and/or the planet then you would not be exploring outside of that comfortable zone most of us exist in. It will get uncomfortable – especially, when talking with friends and family who have diametrically opposed views (say on abortion, LGBTQ2S+ rights, animal welfare/rights, the climate emergency, etc). Tough one but once you embark on knowledge you can’t unlearn it and carry one that it does not exist.
In June 2024 someone shared a resource of Canadian media outlets that is REALLY thorough. It was created by The Maple. It was created in 2021 but I assume that they update it
The Breakdown – “Local AB Web Series on AB Politics. Alleged Media Magnate. Not journalists. Locally crowd funded. content available everywhere you listen to podcasts & YouTube!”
Speaking Municipally podcast made by Mack Male and Troy Pavlek is great for insights to what is happening in city hall.
Taproot – a good clearing house of information of what is happening in Edmonton.
Progress Report – “Independent journalism from Progress Alberta. Award losing podcast by @duncankinney. Must read newsletter from @jimstorrie. Subscribe/become a patron today.”
The Narwhal – “The Narwhal’s team of investigative journalists dives deep to tell stories about the natural world in Canada you can’t find anywhere else.”
The Tyee – “We’re an independent, online news magazine from B.C. founded in 2003. We’re devoted to fact-driven stories, reporting and analysis that informs and enlivens our democratic conversation. Our reporting has changed laws, started movements and garnered numerous awards. While some journalism gives the last word to power, we try to give the last word to ordinary folks.”
The Walrus – “The Walrus provokes new thinking and sparks conversation on matters vital to Canadians including politics, the environment, business, and society.”
Rabble – “We publish news and opinion that ensures readers can engage with the most pressing political issues of our time through a range of progressive views. We work to introduce readers to tomorrow’s public intellectuals, tomorrow’s leaders, tomorrow’s bright new ideas or vision.”
Real Talk by Ryan Jesperson – “Real Talk about news, politics, and pop culture. Live to all of your devices, weekday mornings at 8:30am MT.” Can be a little hit and miss but almost always interesting. Ryan started his own podcast/radio show after he was let go from 630 CHED talk radio.
Chris Adler – though a conservative Mr Adler does offer a fair opinion in most cases. He has used his platform to speak out on several social issues and quite to Jason Kenney to task on his radio show even though he had been a ‘friend’ at one time. I value that there is a firm voice out there on many of these issues. He is starting his own radio/podcast after being released from a corporate brand. Much like Ryan Jesperson did.
Max Fawcett – Lead columnist for Canada’s National Observer
The National Observer – “Get the latest headlines on breaking Canadian news and analysis on federal politics, energy, climate change solutions, food security, and related issues.”Canadaland – “Canadaland is a news site and podcast network funded by its audience. We publish news, opinion and analysis, with a focus on Canadian media, current affairs, and politics.” We no longer suggest that Canadaland is a good source for information.
The Guardian – a UK media outlet that has some very good reporters doing the job that journalists are supposed to do. Has one of the best sections covering the environment/climate change in the world. Most notably – George Monbiot.
CJSR Radio – “We are Edmonton’s only independent, volunteer-powered, campus and community radio station, broadcasting from an old bank vault!” They have BBC World Service and Democracy Now scheduled.
Al Jazeera – I am always impressed by this media group when I come across articles and shows from them.
Richochet Media – Canada wide focus
The Maple – “The Maple produces a daily reported newsletter, covering stories the mainstream media doesn’t. It runs on a subscription model, with more newsletters being available if you subscribe monthly or annually. It was set up by Passage’s co-founders, and used to be known as North99.”
That does not mean that media outlets don’t produce some excellent content but they also spend too much time on distraction and fluff. For instance, how much coverage did CBC give to the coronation of King Charles compared to the climate emergency ripping across our country with forest fires, droughts, and such? They are not connecting the dots and telling the truth – the whole truth.
Just so you know – the Edmonton Journal and the Edmonton Sun are both owned by Postmedia. These are our two main printed newspapers. It would be ‘nice’ if one was leaning left and one right – or better yet, if they acutally followed journalism non-biasm standards, which is extremely difficult… and rare.
Here is a criticism of Postmedia by The National Observer which sheds quite a bit of light on their agenda.
I will make a separate page on Social Media.
