Animal Welfare/Rights/Diet

The intersection of animal welfare/rights and climate change is huge. There is a lot of overlap with deforestation, loss of wetlands/wild places, pollution of waterways from runoff, the loss of biodiversity due to pesticides used on the food crops grown to feed the animals, etc wit hte brutality that is the aminal meat industry. The animal industry has a huge ecological footprint (or hoof print).

  • Voice for Animals – is a registered, non-profit organization dedicated to the protection of animals in a wide range of circumstances. Our focus is on local and province-wide issues but our motto could be “think globally, act locally”. We believe that we must lend our voices to speak out for animals who are abused and exploited because, whether domesticated or wild, they have virtually no protection under human law. Ultimately, we believe that the disregard for the suffering of other species hurts us all.
  • Plant-Based Treaty Edmonton Chapter – Aims to halt the widespread degradation of critical ecosystems caused by animal agriculture. This is a global movement to encourage institutions (universities) and cities to become plant-based.
  • Animal Justice – “Animal Justice leads the legal fight for animals in Canada. Our lawyers work to pass strong new animal protection laws, push to hold industries accountable for abusing animals, and fight on behalf of animals in court.”
  • Mercy for Animals – “Mercy For Animals’ mission is to end industrial animal agriculture by constructing a just and sustainable food system.”
  • Saving Animals From Euthanasia Team (SAFE Team) – “Educate the public on responsible pet ownership and save animals from euthanasia in various Alberta Shelters.”
  • Farm Animal Rescue & Rehoming Movement (FARRM) – FARRM is a sanctuary for rescued farm animals near Wetaskiwin AB. You can volunteer to help out with the animals, attend their events at the farm, or donate to support the care of the animals.
  • Direct Action Everywhere – DXE Edmonton is one of many chapters worldwide, doing peaceful disruptions to speak out for animals.
  • Vegans and Vegetarians of Alberta – they don’t do much anymore in the activist side of things except through the community of eating plant-based foods. They have regular dinner club events and used to have monthly pot-lucks but it seems to have shut down over Covid and hasn’t seemed to get going again.
  • “The Canadian Horse Defence Coalition (CHDC) is a registered not-for-profit organization working towards ending horse slaughter and the live export of horses for slaughter for human consumption”
  • Horseshit – “Canadians are just learning about a breach in our legislation. We’re talking about a legal loophole that permits the transport of live horses in inhumane conditions to foreign countries for human consumption.”
