This year, we want our gathering to be more meaningful and to create a way forward to build safe and brave futures for trans people to live freely and protected without fear of being unlived, disowned, or violent. It’s evidence that the authoritative state is, and might use the notwithstanding clause to continue violating the rights of trans youth, just like the attack on the Alberta teachers’ freedom of expression.

November 21st – 23rd – Democracry Under Siege (2025 Parkland Conference): “We are living through extraordinary times — times that would have seemed unthinkable just a few years ago. Around the world, autocracy is on the rise. The new U.S. regime threatens the sovereignty of these lands currently called Canada. Here at home, misinformation and corruption have taken hold in Alberta’s government. The pillars of liberal democracy are crumbling under the strain of growing authoritarianism. 
This year’s Parkland Institute conference confronts these urgent threats head-on. We’ll take a hard look at the political institutions meant to act as guardrails against autocracy and ask how well they are faring in this role. More importantly, we’ll start a conversation about how we can strengthen those institutions, defend our struggling democracy, repel the current threat, and create a future that is built on the foundations of equality, justice, and solidarity.”

November 22nd, Saturday – Ukrainian Famine and Genocide (Holodomor) Memorial Day: This event, organized by the UCC – Edmonton Branch, will feature a keynote speaker and an opportunity for the community to unite in remembrance.

November 22nd, Saturday – Earth’s Refillery Coop Grand Opening: A bit of self promotion. I have been involved with this coop for 7 months working to get it open. Well, it will be.

November 25th, Tuesday – Webinar: Pensions, Climate Risk and the Law: The Legal Case Against the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board: “Join us for a conversation with Ecojustice, Canada’s largest environmental law charity that’s taken on the case, and two of the young Canadians taking CPPIB to court. They’ll explore how this legal action could reshape pension fund responsibilities in the era of climate crisis – and share why they’ve taken up this fight for retirement security in a safe climate future.
The lawsuit alleges that CPPIB is breaching its fiduciary duty by investing billions in fossil fuel companies without adequately addressing the systemic risks climate change poses to the Canada Pension Plan. The applicants are asking the court to affirm that the fund must act in the best long-term interests of all Canadians by managing climate risks responsibly.

December 2nd, Tuesday – International Day for the Abolition of Slavery: “Latest estimates by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) show that forced labour and forced marriage have increased significantly in the last five years. 10 million more people were in modern slavery in 2021 compared to 2016 global estimates, bringing the total to 50 million worldwide. Women and children remain disproportionately vulnerable.”

December 2nd, Tuesday – The ART of Trauma-Informed De-escalation Strategies: “This full-day training is designed to provide participants with critical skills in using trauma-informed de-escalation strategies. Research shows that trauma is highly prevalent in the general public and will likely play a role in interactions with an escalated individual. This training not only considers the trauma of the escalated individual but also the person providing support. Participants will take a deep dive into assessing their own attitudes, boundaries, communication styles, and debriefing strategies. There is a focus on prevention and long-term reduction of crisis situations. Intended for all areas of the community, this training provides a universal trauma-informed approach to de-escalation.”
