Videos of the Week

Words matter.
The people in Gaza are not starving.
They are being starved while we are watching.
They are being starved by Israel.
This is a war crime and crime against humanity.
This is on our watch!

August 8th, Friday – Canada is Complicit in Gaza’s Holocaust: Silent Protest.
Time: 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm
Location: Connors Road and Cloverdale Hill Road (at the top of the Folk Festival. There is a grassy area on the northeast side of that intersection where we will stand with signs)

August 12th, Tuesday – Artists and Cultural Workers Against Authoritarianism: “Authoritarianism is on the rise globally — AND so is our power to push back. Artists and cultural workers play a pivotal role in successful people-powered movements, shaping what’s possible through story, symbol, and song and moving/inspiring people to courageous action.
Built by and for cultural workers, this training offers insight and connection to meet this moment with strategy, courage, and creativity. Together, we’ll unpack how mass noncooperation can block authoritarian power, learn from global resistance efforts, and imagine how our craft can power collective action.
Whatever your creative medium or path, you’re part of a vital cultural frontline. Let’s grow our power, refuse compliance, and make culture that blocks, bridges and builds.”
Time: 5 pm MT

We refuse to stand by while the government and Canada’s richest corporations hoard wealth, gut our public services, fuel climate collapse, attack migrants, exploit Indigenous lands, and prop up a genocide. We are building a historic alliance to fight back.

Syed Hussan, Migrant Workers Alliance for Change & Migrant Rights Network

There is no participation fee. All readings will either be available for free online or, for those who prefer a hard copy, printed out by CJE.
The book club will be in-person at the CJE office every second Thursday. The initial meeting will be Thursday, August 14th. If you’re unable to make the first meeting, that is totally okay – anyone can join at any time! There will be no required reading before the first meeting.”

August 16th, Saturday – Great Ride of Return: “CALLING EDMONTON WHEELERS OF ALL ABILITIES 🇵🇸🚲🧑‍🦽🛹🛴🧑‍🦼
Since the start of the genocide, communities around the globe answered the @gazasunbirds call to organize solidarity rides, amplifying the demands for a free Palestine.
On Saturday August 16, we ride/roll in YEG in solidarity with all of Palestine and especially people in Gaza who are held under siege. We ride to mourn the 61,200+ people martyred in Gaza, including 18,400+ children. As people who value disability justice, we roll to acknowledge the 152,000+ Gazans wounded by Israel since October 2023 who have been denied access to adequate care and recovery supports, and the physical and mental injuries inflicted on everyone in Gaza through 22 months of destruction, displacement, denial of access to clean water, and manufactured famine. In recognition of Prisoners Justice Day we ride to honor the 10,400 Palestinians currently being held hostage in Israel’s prisons, including 440 children. We roll to be in community with other people who care about the world and are committed to ending oppression, occupation, and violence.
👉Gather at 1pm sharp, Railtown park, 102 Ave & 110 St

September 6th, Saturday – Edmonton Apple Cider Celebration: “Fall’s best flavours. Kids at the cider press. Apples from your yard turned into community joy.
This isn’t just one event—it’s a city-wide celebration of food, family, and fruit rescue.
Join Operation Fruit Rescue Edmonton for 3 unforgettable Saturdays of apple pressing, youth-friendly workshops, and good old-fashioned orchard magic:

📍 Millhurst – Sept 6 At Sakaw Gardens (5820 11A Avenue), a community-grown space in SE Edmonton
🍏 Pedal-powered cider pressing, preservation demos, garden tours

📍 Riverdale – Sept 13 In the heart of Edmonton’s river valley at Riverdale Community League
🍎 Orchard blessings, food forest tours, cider tasting

📍 Avonmore – Oct 4 Youth & Family Day! Best for ages 8–14
🧺 Apple butter demos, fruit leather making, preservation skills for kids

➜ Why We Celebrate the Apple
Each fall, Edmontonians gather not just to press apples—but to honour them. We bless the trees that feed us, give thanks for what the season brings, and teach kids that food isn’t just something you buy—it’s something you care for
Our orchard blessing ceremony revives an ancient tradition called wassailing—where songs are sung to the trees, cider is poured at their roots, and joy is shared to call forth next year’s harvest. It’s silly. It’s soulful. And your kids will never forget it.

➜ Why Families Keep Coming Back
This may be the first official month-long Apple Cider Celebration, but our family pressing events have been a hit for years.
Children pedal the Apple Annihilator (our bike-powered fruit crusher), press juice, and sip the results right there. Families learn to preserve fruit, reduce waste, and discover how something as simple as an apple can create community.
The smell of warm cider fills the air. Spiced fruit leather cooks nearby. Minstrels strum medieval tunes on guitar and harp. You won’t just attend—you’ll feel immersed in the season.

🍎 What to Bring

➜ Picked apples (if you have them)
➜ A reusable mug for hot cider
➜ A tote or bucket of fruit to donate

Curiosity, cozy layers, and maybe a picnic blanket!

❤️ Volunteers Needed
We’re looking for 10 volunteers per event—help with setup, cider stations, or welcoming guests. Great for families, teens, or anyone who loves fall festivals. Reach out if you’d like to help make this celebration shine.
Time: see event page on Facebook
Location: Changing location but September 6th is at 5820 11A Avenue
Facebook: Operation Fruit Rescue Edmonton
