August 12th, Tuesday – Artists and Cultural Workers Against Authoritarianism: “Authoritarianism is on the rise globally — AND so is our power to push back. Artists and cultural workers play a pivotal role in successful people-powered movements, shaping what’s possible through story, symbol, and song and moving/inspiring people to courageous action.
Built by and for cultural workers, this training offers insight and connection to meet this moment with strategy, courage, and creativity. Together, we’ll unpack how mass noncooperation can block authoritarian power, learn from global resistance efforts, and imagine how our craft can power collective action.
Whatever your creative medium or path, you’re part of a vital cultural frontline. Let’s grow our power, refuse compliance, and make culture that blocks, bridges and builds.”

August 16th, Saturday – Great Ride of Return: “AVE THE DATE! Saturday Aug 16, 1-4pm is an all-wheels rides that includes options for cyclists of all levels of experience, people in wheelchairs, and people on skateboards, roller blades, scooters, or any other kind of wheeled transport.
This is part of the @greatrideofreturn – a global, family-friendly grassroots movement uniting communities across more than 95 cities and 35 countries for monthly rides demanding justice, equality, and an end to Israel’s occupation of Palestine. Since 2023 there have been over 400 rides involving more than 10,000 participants.
The Great Ride of Return was inspired by the Great March of Return, a protest in Gaza from 2018-2019 that was met with the Occupation’s violence. Israel killed 223 Palestinians and injured over 30,000, including 125 people who lost limbs as a result. One of these was Alaa al-Dali, an Olympic hopeful cyclist, who had his leg amputated after being shot by an Israeli sniper. Alaa formed the @gazasunbirds as a para-cycling team to provide training opportunities for amputees. Since Israel’s escalation in 2023, the Gaza Sunbirds have shifted from athletic competition to Gazan survival, using their bikes to deliver emergency supplies and raising funds for food, hygiene supplies, blankets, and shelters for displaced families.
In Edmonton, cyclists and cycling advocates have joined with Palestine solidarity organizers and disability justice advocates to create what we hope will be the first of many local rides.
The international theme for the August ride is solidarity with Palestinian political prisoners (August 10 is Prisoners Justice Day). A community gathering after the ride will include information about prison justice in Palestine.
