March 13th, Thursday – Lost Rivers: “You are cordially invited to join us – Edmonton Chapter Council of Canadians, Rewild Alberta! and Paths for People – in celebration of The International Day of Action for Rivers 2025.
Our purpose is to meet in person and share awareness of the gifts of rivers and their tributaries beginning with:
*** A public screening (1hr12min) of Canadian Documentary Lost Rivers at the Strathcona Public Library (8331 -104 St.) on Thursday, March 13 starting at 7:00 pm.
*** Followed by a discussion of a Paths for People-initiated Pause of the City’s trestle bridge and road renovation project in consideration of green space or park in this lost portion of Mill Creek.
By meeting face-to-face and sharing perspectives, we can build towards a critical mass of concerned citizens working on disparities on health, wealth and education… as well as inspiring actions on behalf of the riverine ecosystems that support us all.

March 18th, Tuesday – Hands Off Our CPP Counter Protest: “The United Conservative Party wants to pull Albertans out of the Canadian Pension Plan. There are people who travel around the province sharing their story about how great it will be.
We don’t think it is and just like the majority of Albertans. Still these people and the UCP government continue to push for an Alberta Pension Plan – much to the detriment of its citizens.
A group of people from Enough Is Enough will be at the entrance to let people entering know that there are many Albertans that are strongly opposed to this campaign.”
Time: 6 pm
Location: Strathcona Community Centre, 401 Festival Avenue (meet at the intersection of Festival Avenue and Festival Lane)

March 19th, Wednesday – Let’s Stand Together, and Walk Out!: “Families, I am a mom of two. A few families and I feel, it’s time to take a stand! On March 19th, we are calling for a Mass Walkout to show our unwavering support for Education Assistants, support staff, and all the essential workers who keep our schools running.
It’s time to amplify their voices and demand fair wages, respect, and better working conditions!
What You Can Do:
Bring your signs, wear purple and join us at Ross Sheppard for a rally at 930AM on
Wednesday March 19th
Spread the word—share this post & invite others!
Together, we send a powerful message: Schools don’t function without support staff. Respect & fair pay now!

Time: 9:30 am
Location: Ross Sheppard High School, 136th Street and 111th Avenue
Facebook: Let’s Stand Together, and Walk Out!

March 19th, Wednesday – Care 101: Building Cultures of Care in Organizing Spaces: “If we want to build a society that puts care before profit, we need to put the practice of care before productivity in our personal lives and climate justice organizing. Failing to center care in our movement spaces means leaving the needs of those most impacted by systems of oppression behind.
Additionally, learning the skills to build cultures of care in our grassroots groups can help make our groups more accessible, anti-oppressive and guard against burnout.
In this first workshop in the HUB’s Care series, participants will leave the session with the knowledge and tools to:
++ Identify and advocate for your and others’ care needs
++ Promote group safety through the SCARF model
++ Incorporate Care Webs in your organizing groups
++ Give and receive constructive feedback by using healthy communication principles
Time: 5:00 PM
Location: Online – Zoom

Bring your kuffiyehs, signs, flags and be ready to raise your voices for Gaza. 🇵🇸”
Time: 5:30 pm
Location: Alberta Legislature, 10800 – 97th Avenue – north steps

March 19th, Wednesday – The Truth About Lucy the Elephant: “For decades,
Lucy has been trapped in the harsh Edmonton climate, alone and suffering. But finally, the film exposing the truth about her life is here.
TV Premiere: April 6 at 9 PM on CBC
Lucy was captured in Sri Lanka and brought to Edmonton at just two years old. Now, she’s known as the Loneliest and Coldest Elephant in the World.
That most people don’t know about
Lucy:
It costs taxpayers $300,000 per year to keep
Lucy in Edmonton.
Lucy is officially retired from the zoo.
She is left alone for 16 hours a day, even though elephants are highly social.
Upgrades that have been recommended for years—like a therapeutic pool, larger space, and clean air system—never get done. These would cost around $1 million in taxpayer money.
Experts confirm that
Lucy can be safely transported to a sanctuary at no cost.
Despite what the zoo claims,
Lucy is not geriatric. She’s middle-aged and could live for many more years.
The zoo is violating CAZA’s standards—elephants should never live alone.
How you can help:
Spread the word! invite your animal-loving friends to the film!
If you’re in Edmonton, scan the QR code to sign the petition.
Call your City Councillor and demand that
Lucy be retired to The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee.
Lucy deserves better. Let’s make sure her story is heard.

March 20th, Thursday – Rally Against Danielle Smith & Rick Wilson in Wetaskiwin:
JOIN US IN PROTEST ![]()
Danielle Smith and Rick Wilson are coming to Wetaskiwin to host a $250-a-ticket event, claiming to care about rural Albertans. But how many everyday Albertans can afford that price tag when inflation is through the roof? While they wine and dine, families are struggling to make ends meet.
Smith just cut daycare subsidies, making it harder for parents to work and afford care for their children. She’s cozying up to Trump, bringing American-style extremism to Alberta. And let’s not forget the AHS privatization scandal, where our public healthcare is being gutted right before our eyes.
Let’s show them what real rural Albertans think.
Bring your signs, your voices, and your passion for a better Alberta. It’s time to stand up and make it clear: we won’t be ignored, and we won’t be silenced.
You are not alone! Many of your friends and neighbours agree! Come see for yourself.
If you can’t join us please drive by and Honk your support!
Better is possible Alberta!

March 22nd, Saturday – Tesla Take Down Edmonton: “Today’s action is to show solidarity with people in the USA who are victims of the actions of an unelected plutocrat.
We stand to raise awareness of what impact one of the owners of Tesla is having on the social foundation of the USA.
We ask people to consider not purchasing any Tesla vehicles now or in the future since it is the only way that we can send an effective message. Personally, I do not think you should be on the hook for selling your Tesla but as an owner you could write a note to Tesla threatening them that would not consider purchasing a replacement in the future unless things change.
We will be on the grass by the sidewalk along 111th Avenue.
This is a peaceful non-violent action to bring awareness of the plutocracy/oligarchy actions of one of Tesla’s owners – Elon Musk.
If you already own a Tesla vehicle – thank you for choosing an electric vehicle for the sake of the environment. You are not the target of our action – despite what the banner says (we used the image from the US site).”

March 27th & 28th – PIA Conference: Community in Perilous Times: “Building community power is the only way we are going to build the Alberta we all want and deserve.
These days we can all feel it. We live in perilous times and there are no silver bullet solutions in the fight back. From rampant attacks on healthcare, education, and social services to relentless cuts and privatization, things are getting harder and harder for everyday Albertans. Our right wing populist government targets the very institutions and services that make our province work and blames vulnerable communities for the mess they’ve created.
It’s an effective strategy that needs a better response from all of us. And it starts at the community level. In our workplaces, in our community leagues, and in our schools. Our power rests in our relationships and our ability to organize together.”
Time: 9:00 am

April 8th, Tuesday – Unpacking the Report! Polluting Education: The Influence of Fossil Fuels on Children’s Education in Canada: “Did you know fossil fuel companies are shaping what kids learn about climate change in schools? A new report from CAPE and For Our Kids, “Polluting Education: The Influence of Fossil Fuels on Children’s Education in Canada,” reveals that at least 39 oil and gas companies are funding or developing K-12 environmental and climate-related materials in our schools. These resources downplay the fossil fuel industry’s role in climate change, exaggerate oil and gas’ pro-environmental actions, emphasize individual responsibility over systemic solutions, and shift responsibility away from fossil fuel polluters.
Join us for a live webinar and panel discussion featuring beloved children’s entertainer Raffi, climate and mental health expert Britt Wray, and the report’s authors, Anne Keary and Jennifer Chesnut. Together, we’ll unpack the report’s findings, explore how fossil fuel influence is undermining climate education, and discuss how we can take action and demand fossil fuel free education for our kids.”

I wish they had not used the term ‘moron’.
I remember when someone in Canada called George W Bush a moron and was fired from their government job. It turns out that ‘moron’ has a value – something like a person with an IQ of less than 40.
Obviously, GW Bush was higher than that so it was not true.
If you subscribe you get a new version of the Activist Agenda when it is published: usually on Thursday.
