November 2nd, Saturday – Stop the UCP!: Joint rallies in Calgary and Edmonton on November 2. 🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈
Join us on November 2nd, 2024 to defend our schools, our healthcare, and the rights of our neighbours. 📚🩺🏳️⚧️
The Government of Alberta, under Premier Danielle Smith and the United Conservative Party, has undermined our public schools, defunded and destabilized our healthcare system, and threatens our rights and freedoms, starting with our transgender neighbours.
Danielle Smith is out of step with the values of Albertans and she needs to start listening to all of us! We are workers, parents, teachers, pensioners, and queer people. We are proud Albertans and we are speaking up for a fair, free and equitable Alberta.
On October 28th, Premier Smith is expected to unveil her latest policies that put personal political agendas ahead of everyday Albertans. Who do these policies actually help?
These latest actions, rationalized with fear and misinformation, will make life harder for transgender Albertans and their families.
In response, we ask all Albertans who want a fair, equitable, and progressive future to speak up for the province we want. Come together as concerned citizens, workers, teachers, parents, queer people and everyday Albertans to stop the UCP and get Alberta back on track.
Time: 3 pm to 5 pm
Location: Alberta Legislature, 10800 – 97th Avenue

November 5th, Tuesday – Pack the Leg for Trans Rights!: “This Tuesday November 5th, we are going to SHOW UP for Trans Albertans and allies by packing the legislature. RSVP here and plan to support hundreds of other Albertans who have had enough of Danielle Smith’s attacks on trans and queer youth.
This protest will follow the rules and decorum of the legislature and is meant to make sure that the UCP have to “look us in the eye” as the tear up human rights and trans rights.
The legislative assembly convenes at 1:30pm and rises at 6pm, so you can show up throughout the afternoon, but we encourage folks to come early to make sure you can find a seat.
If we reach capacity, we will cycle folks in and out to make sure everyone has an opportunity to participate in packing the legislature.
***This action is a joint effort between Trans Rights YEG, PIA, and all our kin from across Alberta.”

November 5th, Tuesday – Greening Faith Buildings Webinar:
Time: 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm
Location: Zoom

November 7th, Thursday – Save Our CPP Town Hall: “Next fall, Albertans will face a critical decision via referendum: whether to remain in the viable and dependable Canada Pension Plan or to trust the UCP’s unproven scheme for an Alberta Pension Plan.
Premier Smith and the UCP are spending millions of dollars trying to convince Albertans of their plan for the APP. From the faulty calculations used to make pie-in-the-sky promises of higher benefits and lower contributions to working Albertans, to the reverse engineering of evidence to move forward with this plan, to purposefully obscuring the results of consultation with Albertans, Albertans have seen time and time again that they just can’t trust Smith and the UCP with their retirement security.
Thousands of Albertans have already taken action to protect their retirement security. And thousands more will join us as we ramp up to campaign hard to save our CPP. Are you one of them?”
Time: 6:30pm
Location: Bellvue Community League, 7308 112 Ave NW, Edmonton

November 7th, Thursday – Addressing the Climate Elephant Workshop: “Speaking to others about climate change can be one of the most difficult conversations to hold. At this online workshop, participants will learn how to have more effective conversations about climate change with their friends and family. This workshop is a welcoming, judgement-free space to address climate change concerns in our lives and personal relationships.
Carbon Conversations Toronto (CCTO) is a volunteer-led group with a mission to normalize climate action. Climate change can leave individuals feeling anxious, hopeless and in despair. CCTO h8thelps people find their power and motivation and turn that into climate action. Since 2017, CCTO has facilitated courageous, open-hearted conversations about climate change through their flagship Climate Change and You program, climate cafes, and other climate workshops.”

November 15th to17th – Parkland Conerence 2024: The Road Ahead: Strategies for Building a Better Future: “In recent years, Alberta, Canada, and the world have been on a dangerous path. It is a path toward inequality and unsustainability. It is a path that creates winners and losers, with the losers left at the side of the road. It is also a path that leads to environmental destruction. Those who put us on this path foment division and conflict. But this path is not inevitable. We can forge a better direction for our communities. We need to find new ideas and refresh old ideas to fit new challenges. More than anything, we need to find new ways to organize so that we may build a more just, more democratic future for everyone. This conference takes a hard look at the path taken and offers options for a way forward.”

November 15th, Friday – FIRE AND OIL: Rising to the Challenge of a More Flammable World: “John Vaillant – Humans, aided by the fossil fuel industry (the “fire industry”), have altered the chemistry of our planet and its atmosphere in profound, life-changing ways. As a result, we are now, in real time, crossing a threshold into a new climate regime marked by previously unimagined extremes and whipsawing instability. How we conceptualize and respond to this unprecedented challenge is of immediate and paramount importance, not just to our psyches and our souls, but to the future of everyone on Earth.
In this Changemakers talk, John Vaillant will offer ways of seeing, feeling – and meeting – this epochal moment.”

November 16th, Saturday – We Charge Nakba: Genocide of the Palestinian People and Limits of International Law: (Acedemics need to make the titles of their lectures and books unappealing).
“The ECMC Chair In Islamic Studies at the University of Alberta, in collaboration with Canada Research Chair in Politics of Citizenship and Human Rights, the Department of Political Science, and Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies (MEIS), cordially invite you to attend this lecture.”
“For eleven months and counting, the only nuclear power in the Middle East has waged a genocidal campaign against a besieged population who are predominantly refugees exiled from their homes still within eye’s view. Had international law been adequate to redress the condition of dispossession, exile, and torture, there would be no genocide today and Nakba would be a historical lesson rather than a source of contentious debate. Therefore, it should not be surprising that international law, including decisions issued from the International Court of Justice as well as arrest warrants requested from the International Criminal Court, have been unable to stem gruesome, relentless slaughter. This keynote will attempt to address this conundrum as well as the following questions: What explains this historic and contemporary insufficiency? How does the genocide in Gaza test the legitimacy, or lack thereof, of international law and legal institutions? Finally, what is the potential of existing legal frameworks and laws to meet this challenge?”
Time: 7:30 pm
Location: Arts Barn (in Old Strathcona), 10330 84 Ave NW, Edmonton
Register: Eventbrite

November 19th, Tuesday – How can we stand up for pollution pricing?: “Too many Canadians are blaming the carbon tax for their financial pain, jeopardizing a climate policy most of us initially supported. What’s at stake isn’t just the price of gas – or the next election. The Axe the Tax campaign risks mortgaging our kids’ future. How do we stand up for the principle that every parent teaches their children: when you make a mess, clean it up.
Join us for the launch of our Pollution Pricing Posse at our next Community Call on November 19 @ 4pm PT / 7pm ET. Gen Squeeze Founder Dr. Paul Kershaw and Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment President Dr. Melissa Lem will lead a discussion about how and why we must stand up for this keystone policy.
Facts alone won’t change Canadians’ minds about pollution pricing when their wallets are so squeezed. Join us to strategize about winning back their hearts.”

November 20th, Wednesday – Action Hour: Tell your MP we need Financial Regulation now!: “Climate-Aligned Financial Policy is a crucial piece in the fight against climate change. We need strong rules for our banks and pensions so that they stop investing heavily in fossil fuels and start investing in the clean energy transition at the rapid pace we need.
Join us for a quick action hour and send an email to your MP demanding more urgent action to regulate our banks and pensions!
The more they hear from people like us, the more they’ll understand that this issue is important to the public.
We’ll provide email templates and guidance. Feel free to pop by or stay for part of the time!
