September 27, Friday – Fight the Flights: On September 27th, 2024 we stand in solidarity with Jann Arden. On this day we will demand that they hurry the hell up and pass this legislation before the next election!
[Jann is doing an action in Vancouver and Edmonton is hosting a solidairty action because horses are being shipped out of our airport].
This is what Jann has to say about the 27th:
“Well hello there,
Mark your calendars for FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27th. It’s time to rustle the dust once more.
Our HORSESHIT campaign has influenced Parliament to pass BILL C-355 to end live horse export. But it doesn’t stop there. It now needs Senate approval, and with an unpredictable election on the horizon, we must act fast or risk missing this window for years or decades to come. Remember, it passed by just 181-137 votes.
OUR WORK IS NOT DONE
Join me in Vancouver where I’ll be singing, speaking, and sharing our message. Whether in person or online, grab your HORSESHIT gear and make your voice heard. More details are coming soon. Until then, get ready — 100% of HORSESHIT sales go to the Canadian Horse Defence Coalition.
Let’s end this nightmare together. Love, Jann”
Time: 3 pm 5 pm
Location: 100th Street and Jasper Avenue (The corner that the Fairmount Hotel Macdonald is on)

September 27th, Friday – National Day for Truth and Reconcilliation: “While the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is on September 30th, we will be honouring this day on September 27th to coincide with our weekly gatherings. 🧡
This is a day to honour the children who were taken from their families, forced to assimilate to religious colonialism and to remember the children who didn’t make it out of residential schools.
We ask that attendees wear orange this coming Friday. We will be welcoming Kokum Kathy to share some teachings and a prayer, followed by a candlelight ceremony. 🕯️We hope everyone, especially those who are given September 30th as a holiday, pause to reflect on what this day means and why it is observed. This is a day of deep mourning for the injustices faced by the Indigenous Peoples of Turtle Island, and for the childhoods and innocence that was robbed by colonialism which continues to have an impact today.
Every Child Matters. 🧡🧡🧡🧡
Time: 4pm to 7pm
Location: Pride Corner, 104th Street and 82nd Avenue (Calgary Trail and Whyte Avenue SE Corner)
Instagram: Pride Corner on Whyte
September 28th, Saturday – Weekly Ceasefire Now event at the Market: “We will stand together in solidarity with people around the world calling for an immediate Ceasefire Now in all conflict zones and all parties work towards a just, respectful, and long-lasting peace.”
Time: 11:00am
Location: Old Strathcona Farmer’s Market, 10310 – 83rd Avenue

September 28th, Saturday – UCP Town Hall with Premier Danielle Smith: The UCP and Danielle Smith are having another members-only “town hall” and this time in Edmonton.
So we figured that we are going to show up. Enough Is Enough intends to gather outside the building at 11:30 am to let attendees know – not all Albertans are supportive of this premier and this party.
This is a non-violent peaceful action.
PS – since this is private property we will need to stay on public lands. We may be limited to the landscaped area on the Avenue or need to stand across the avenue. We will adapt as need be.
Time: Doors: 11:30am | Program: 12:30pm
Location: Maharaja Banquet Hall, 9257 – 34a Avenue NW
Facebook: Enough Is Enough Edmonton

September 28th, Saturday – Accessibilty Now! Rally : “Alberta is one of the last provinces in Canada that DOES NOT have an Accessibility Act.
Accessibility legislation, in contrast to human rights legislation, require applicable organizations to comply with accessibility standards: these standards are designed by committees that include people with disabilities. When organizations improve accessibility, people with disabilities have greater opportunities to become involved in their communities, find meaningful employment, consume goods and services, use public transportation and be able to physically access public spaces and businesses.”
Time: 1:30 pm
Location: Alberta Legislature, 10800 – 97th Avenue
Website: Barrier Free Alberta

September 29th, Sunday – All Out for Palestine and Lebanon:

September 30th, Monday – Orange Shirt Day Community Walk: “All are welcome to join us in holding space through prayer and song in tribute to our loved ones and survivors.
Walk alongside us in honour of the survivors who are gone, and those still
walking with us.
We see, honour, and respect every person holding space to heal.”
Orange shirts and bagged lunches are provided free of charge to all participants
Time: Meet at 12 noon and the walk leaves at 12:30 pm. It ends at Giovanni Caboto Park
Location: Start – Mary Burlie Park, 97th Street and 105th Avenue (Just north of the rat hole/railroad underpass on 97th street and the old Remand Centre)
September 30th, Monday – National Day for Truth and Reconciliation: “Each year, September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
The day honours the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process.”
[The Federal Government and provincial governments have fallen short on the 94 recommendations set out in the final report. We should always remember that when people wear an orange shirt on this day it does not mean that everything is nicely done up. The opposite is true.]
There are several events happening around this day. See the City of Edmonton website for some of them.

October 1st, Tuesday – International Day of Older Persons: “Population ageing is a major global trend reshaping societies worldwide. Life expectancy at birth now exceeds 75 years in half of the world’s countries, 25 years longer than in 1950. By 2030, older persons are projected to outnumber youth globally, with this increase most rapid in developing countries. This demographic shift has significantly transformed the caregiving landscape, encompassing a wide range of needs for both paid and unpaid support in formal and informal settings. As populations age, the demand for comprehensive healthcare, care, and social support services has grown substantially, particularly for older persons with conditions such as dementia. In recognition of these challenges and opportunities, the 34th commemoration of the United Nations International Day of Older Persons will focus on the theme of “Ageing with Dignity: The Importance of Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older Persons Worldwide“.”
Many seniors in our society do a significant portion of the lifting in the volunteering sector – ie, food bank, elder care, baby sitting, etc.
There is much more that they can do – see the Later Is Too Late and Enough Is Enough (October 27th).

October 5th, Saturday – Edmonton Rodeo Disruption/Protest: “Its that time of year again, where the bullies come out in droves to slam animals to the ground and wrap their necks with ropes while dragging them around a bit. The city of Edmonton continues to support this abuse all because of the money it brings in. We should know right from wrong by now.
Lets tell them.”

October 6th, 7th, & 8th – Global Days of Remembrance and Action: “Join us in your own way to say that violence, whether in defense or for liberation, is not the answer. Only nonviolence, which dismantles systems of oppression and violence and calls for collective justice and equality, will ensure that Israelis and Palestinians can live together in safety, peace, and justice.”
Wear a black ribbon or armband during these days. We want to see people all around the world, in our cities and towns, workplaces, and educational institutions, wear black ribbons or armbands in order to create the collective consciousness of grief for lives that haven been lost. You are also welcomed to write “Every life, a Universe” on your ribbons or armbands.
[Comment by Michael – I have a bit of a problem with the statement above – “ensure that Israelis and Palestinians“. It sets the foundation of moving forward as de facto the state of Israel deserves to exist. The reality is that it was and is Palestine and the Jewish people can “ive together in safety, peace, and justice” in the state of Palestine (as they did before the Balfour declaration and the Zionists manufactured the state of Israel on the lands of the Palestinians. This is a false presumptive of equals. I like the goal of peace and nonviolence but I also like fairness, equity, respect, etc as well.]

October 25th, Friday – Halloween Critical Mass Ride: “We ride.
Critical Mass rides are to make visible the number of cyclists in a city and remind city administrators that we require safe, smart, and effective infrastructure to all us to use our bicycles (or other human-powered devices).
Bring noise makers, lights, signs/messages (if safe to do so), cameras, etc and join your community in a celebration of the intelligence of the bicycle.
This ride will have a Halloween theme to it because – it can be scary out there… and it shouldn’t be! Please make sure your costumes keep you warm/dry, don’t hamper your vision or mobility, etc. Lights for bicycles.
Let’s have some fun!
The route will likely be about 8 kms. There could be a social afterwards.

November 15th to17th – Parkland Conerence 2024: The Road Ahead: Strategies for Building a Better Future: “In recent years, Alberta, Canada, and the world have been on a dangerous path. It is a path toward inequality and unsustainability. It is a path that creates winners and losers, with the losers left at the side of the road. It is also a path that leads to environmental destruction. Those who put us on this path foment division and conflict. But this path is not inevitable. We can forge a better direction for our communities. We need to find new ideas and refresh old ideas to fit new challenges. More than anything, we need to find new ways to organize so that we may build a more just, more democratic future for everyone. This conference takes a hard look at the path taken and offers options for a way forward.”

November 15th, Friday – FIRE AND OIL: Rising to the Challenge of a More Flammable World: “John Vaillant – Humans, aided by the fossil fuel industry (the “fire industry”), have altered the chemistry of our planet and its atmosphere in profound, life-changing ways. As a result, we are now, in real time, crossing a threshold into a new climate regime marked by previously unimagined extremes and whipsawing instability. How we conceptualize and respond to this unprecedented challenge is of immediate and paramount importance, not just to our psyches and our souls, but to the future of everyone on Earth.
In this Changemakers talk, John Vaillant will offer ways of seeing, feeling – and meeting – this epochal moment.”
