Activist Agenda July 25th, 2024 – Edmonton

As Calgary is blanketed in 10+ Air Quality Index smoke, Jasper is burning, Fort McMurray is cut off by fires, the UCP are acting like it is business as usual and anything bad is because of the Liberals/NDP in Ottawa, etc people are starting to pay attention to what is happening in the world with regards to climate. (As well, there are too many armed conflicts/genocides happening in the world.)

Things slow down a bit during the summer in the Edmonton activism space – which is odd since in many places summer is a time that people get out onto the streets a lot more.

The Activist Agenda (Edmonton) is released on Thursday so you can see what might fit into your weekend. This list is constantly being updated so I do suggest that you check throughout the week for any updated actions. Visit Activist Agenda to see the latest version.

Video of the Week

The dramtic increase in the cost of food and living was caused by the grab for greater profits by the people that were in the position to do so. People and corporations that control a good portion of our grocery stores, people that own the buildings that are rented out, people that supply the energy (electricity, gasoline, etc), etc.
They have been making obscene profits over the past few years.
A good time is being had by the wealthy and corporations.
Come to the Billionaire’s Block Party on July 31st and express your concerns.

July 25th to August 18th – Plan for Parks: “The Government of Alberta is gathering input to develop a new Plan for Parks to ensure their long-term sustainability.
Albertans take tremendous pride in our provincial parks and recreation areas. This new strategic plan for the provincial parks system will reflect input from Albertans.
The Government of Alberta remains focused on creating nature-based recreation and camping opportunities, building trails and facilities and ensuring the long-term success of the parks system in an environmentally responsible way.
In 1930, the Provincial Parks and Protected Areas Act was enacted, leading to the establishment of Alberta’s first provincial parks. Today, provincial parks and recreation areas are established and administered through the Provincial Parks Act.
By sharing your input, you will help shape how future generations interact with and enjoy Alberta’s parks.”

The People’s Testimonial has been organized as an alternative to the insubstantial independent review of the University of Alberta’s decision to violently sweep the People’s University for Palestine encampment. The students, despite having been continuously betrayed by administration, have extended an invite to both U of A and MacEwan University administration and investigator Adele Kent.
The testimonials will be taking place in ECHA (Edmonton Clinic Health Academy) in room 2-190 on Thursday, August 1st at 6:00 pm.

August 24th, Saturday – Rooted in Justice: Indigenous Youth & the Green Job Revolution: “In the 2024 Federal Budget, the government said that it will launch consultations on the development of a Youth Climate Corps. If won, the Youth Climate Corps would be an audacious program that would provide tens of thousands of young people with good green jobs to fight the climate crisis in their communities. It would provide meaningful work in renewable energy, ecosystem restoration, retrofits, emergency response, and community care work.
We know that Indigenous communities are both facing the brunt of devastating climate impacts caused by fossil fuels and colonialism, and at the leading edge of climate solutions like renewable energy projects, resisting new fossil fuel infrastructure, and reasserting their land and water rights.
So what will a Youth Climate Corps look like centering Indigenous Knowledge and leadership by Indigenous Nations at its core?
Join Indigenous climate justice leaders in conversation with the Climate Emergency Unit to collectively imagine the future of the Youth Climate Corps for Indigenous communities and how to achieve it.
