Video of the Week

What do you think of this animation?

July 4th to August 18th – Plan for Parks: “The Government of Alberta is gathering input to develop a new Plan for Parks to ensure their long-term sustainability.
Albertans take tremendous pride in our provincial parks and recreation areas. This new strategic plan for the provincial parks system will reflect input from Albertans.
The Government of Alberta remains focused on creating nature-based recreation and camping opportunities, building trails and facilities and ensuring the long-term success of the parks system in an environmentally responsible way.
In 1930, the Provincial Parks and Protected Areas Act was enacted, leading to the establishment of Alberta’s first provincial parks. Today, provincial parks and recreation areas are established and administered through the Provincial Parks Act.
By sharing your input, you will help shape how future generations interact with and enjoy Alberta’s parks.”

John Oliver gives an excellent rant about the UK election on July 4th, 2024

July 4th, Thursday – Election in the UK: Why does this matter to us here in Canada? A lot of decisions for investment in fossil fuels are made in London. If the government moves more left (more socially and environmentally elected politicians) it will send a message to other countries.
Right now, in Canada, the Conservatives are lined up (according to the polls) to win the next federal election. We have a job to do. We need to ensure that the Conservative, capitalistic, and neo-liberal mindset does not get that chance. We can see what it has done in the UK over 14 years and the consequences of a Republican/Trump win in the USA is extremely scary. We can see what the cost of having a uber-Conversative party in Alberta led by libertarians has on the social fabric of our communities, public healthcare, pensions, etc.
I want to see more Liberal-Democrats and Greens win in the UK and that they hold the balance of decisions and that will allow more social and environmental decisions being made.

July 9th, Tuesday – Picket – Anti-NATO: We picket to oppose the visit of NATO Secretary-General Stoltenberg to Canada and to declare him persona non grata, ECAWAR is holding a picket on the first day of the annual NATO Summit, which is taking place in Washington from July 9 – 11 this year.
The NATO Washington Summit will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of this aggressive military alliance on April 4, 1949 by twelve countries including Canada.NATO has now been expanded to thirty-two countries, and includes on its agenda this year the admission of Ukraine.
On July 9 we will express our militant opposition to the militarization of Canada including growing war budgets, and Canada’s participation in U.S./NATO wars of aggression and war preparations. Along with NORAD, NATO integrates Canada into the U.S. war economy and strategy to wage endless wars for global hegemony. While a foreign monarch King Charles III is said to be Commander in Chief of the Canadian Armed Forces, our membership in NATO and NORAD brings Canadian forces under the command of the president of the United States. As if Canadians would ever agree to putting a foreign monarch, let alone Genocide Joe or Donald Trump in charge of Canada’s armed forces! All of this violates our right as Canadians to deliberate and decide all matters of war and peace.

We have been programmed to punch down. How many of us are asked for money on the street and then thinking – why should I give you money for drugs, alcohol, tobacco, etc? You should use it for… (something that I/you value).
Yet we don’t question that super rich buying another house, yacht, private jet, n+1 cars, etc.
