Video of the Week
April 11th, Thursday – Canada’s households and the zero carbon transition: “Canada’s energy transition is part of the global energy transition currently underway. Canada’s energy system has been evolving, similar to that of other countries, but this time change is urgent to limit warming. In addition to addressing the climate crisis and promoting greater energy security, energy transitions and shifting to renewable energy systems have the potential to address interrelated challenges connected to fossil fuels. But even low carbon transitions can distribute the costs and benefits of transition unequally and calls are being made for the energy transition to be equitable so that it benefits everyone.” See for registration link more information.

April 12-13 – The Decline and Fall of Western Civilization: Our Choice? This is a right-wing ‘freedom’ fest. They are hosting climate change denier Dr. Patrick Moore and Maxime Bernier (People’s Party of Canada).
Others include: John Robson (columnist at Epoch Times and National Post), Michelle Stirling, Stockwell Day, Paul Hinman, Andrew Lawton, and Marc Morano (from Wikipedia – “founded and runs the website ClimateDepot.com… a US non-profit organisation that promotes climate change denial“. On April 6th, someone tore the banner in half and I have not repaired it yet. I plan on erecting other signs in its place.
Why do I have UCP on this sign? Well, they form the present government in Alberta and like all previous Alberta governments (including the NDP) have pushed the fossil fuel agenda to the detriment of the planet while knowing what impacts their actions would have on people and planet.

April 15th, Monday – One Year Anniversary of War in Sudan: When we stand at the weekly Ceasefire Now action at the Old Strathcona Farmer’s Market people ask us – Ceasefire for what conflict/war. The horrible genocide being perpetrated in Gaza is foremost in many people’s awareness but there are many armed conflicts happening right now (ranging from 30 to 110 – it depends what your definition is). I try and talk about the number of conflicts and how ceasefire is the first step to peace.
Sudan is a tragic case and has been for many decades (I am sure that it stretches back to the British rule and before). The Janjaweed (The Devil Comes on Horseback), the battle of oil resources in the south and the eventual creation of a separate state, the slaughter that was Darfur, etc.
April 15th marks the one year when fighting broke out between the two main military factions in the government.
I have not heard whether there is a gathering to mark this anniversary.
I guess my intention of posting this here is to highlight that the killing of people is not only what is shown on our screens or in printed material. All of the innocent people should be remembered and fought for.
April 16th, Tuesday Chris Turner: How to be a Climate Optimist: In this presentation, based on his most recent bestselling book, Chris Turner distills 20 years on the climate solutions beat worldwide into a powerful case for optimism in the face of the challenge of climate change. Turner has been reporting on clean energy, sustainable business, and smart green design the world over since long before any of these were mainstream interests, and he draws on the full breadth of his extensive reporting to paint a vivid portrait of a global energy transition already tackling the climate crisis and pointing the way to a much brighter future.

May 25th, Saturday – 5th Global Mothers Rebellion: “The climate crisis is not slowing down and temperatures are rising all over the planer. Mothers Rebellion is busy planning our fifth global action which will be held on the 25th of May, marking Africa Day. On this day we will amplify the voices of our sisters in Africa.”
“The mothers of the world won’t look away, they refuse to give up, and they will do everything they can to get climate justice for their children.
That was the message delivered by rebel mothers in 62 cities across 20 countries the day before much of the world celebrated Mother’s Day. They sat in outward-facing circles in public spaces, holding signs with the names of their children, and were joined by grandmothers, aunties, nieces, sisters, children, and other allies.
Each circle was different—some quiet and contemplative, some including dance and song, others holding climate story-times for children or pram parades!”
I am unaware if anything is yet planned here in Edmonton. I encourage people to set things in motion to show solidarity and raise awareness. Here is a link to help guide you through the process.
