What’s going on with encampments?

People are contacting Edmonton Coalition on Housing and Homelessness (ECOHH) asking for updates on what is happening about people who are camping on streets and parkland.
People who are camping are experiencing a ferocious assault on their human rights, safety, and dignity. After a small period when a court ruling required campers be given 48 hours notice before their shelters could be demolished, things have returned to the situation in place for years before– with no notice, the City arrives and throws everything a person cannot salvage into a garbage truck and takes it away.
Worse, since January 16 this has been happening at a much greater speed and frequency that has ever been seen before. One location, for example, had its shelters torn down on three different times between January 3 and January 22.
During the three week period when notice was required, ECOHH could spread word of
actions on social media and it was helpful to have significant media coverage as well as many ordinary people coming to see what really happens at such times. Most expressed surprise and concern to see the reality was not as kindly and helpful as they had imagined.
But with no notice required and sometimes several removals happening at the same time in different locations, it is difficult to share information and invite witnesses in time. But ECOHH continues to urge anyone seeing a tear-down happening to take photos and share them and to post the location on whatever social media they use.
A major challenge created by the new accelerated approach is that people no longer have time to accumulate all the materials they need to make good shelters to resist the cold and wet of the weather so the simple little places being made now leave people exposed to more dangers than ever before. And the repeated attacks are leading to some of those who camp beginning to say they have lost any hope, and to give in to discouragement, which is a threat to mental well-being.
City Council declared what is happening an emergency, but has taken no actions to assist people who are living in informal settlements so continuing to contact elected people and call for real action is important. So too is sharing blankets, tarps, warm clothes, snack food, good footwear and other essentials. Contact ECOHH for suggestions about how this can be done if you do not already have an organization to support. And you can always keep up to date with what is happening by using the ECOHH website or the Edmonton Coalition on Housing and Homelessness Facebook page.

[I have some more resources listed on the Housing page if you are wanting to find more information about housing/homelessness/houselessness in Edmonton.

Our provincial Conservative government is actively working to keep us on the fossil fuel teat. We need a just transition to renewables for a healthier life.

January is Veganuary: One of the best decision you can make for your personal health and the health of the planet is to consume less or now meat and animal products.
You can visit Veganuary‘s website for inspiration. There are LOTS of resources there and elsewhere on the internet.

January 18th, Thursday – Deep Dive: Why Freedom for Palestine is a Climate Justice Issue: “Following on from our weekly series Climate Justice Power Hour for Palestine, join us for a deep dive on why freedom for Palestine is a climate justice issue.
We’ll:
++ Create a learning space to recognise how the Palestinian struggle is also a struggle for climate justice rooted in the same systems of oppression and power
++ Explore Palestine’s liberation struggle through the lenses of climate reparations, and reparations campaigns coming from movement spaces in the global south
++ Inspire collaborations and solidarity between people and organisations working across these two movements

January 19th, Friday – Weekly Climate Strike Ceasefire Now!A weekly reminder to Edmontonians that we are in a Climate Emergency.
Because of the immediacy of situation of the Israel/Gaza conflict we will be using our time at these strikes to focus on Ceasefire Now. The world has dragged its feet on taking acting on the Climate Breakdown for 5 decades I don’t think it will matter much if we shift our time for a bit to Ceasefire Now!
(I use the term conflict but that is not really the right word because the sides are so uneven. It is like when a protest is happening and a few people pick up bricks to throw at the authorities and then the authorities open fire on the whole crowd – and doesn’t stop. Is that a conflict or something quite different)?
Extra signs will be available for people to use – or bring your own.
Time: 8 am to 9 am
Location109th street and 88th Avenue

January 20th, Saturday – Climate Justice Signage Display: I will erect these signs beside the bus stop on Gateway and 83rd Avenue. This is a static display since I normally go over and stand with a group of people doing Ceasefire Now activism in front of the market.
I will return to the signs and stand there for a period of time and talk with people if they are interested in discussing the issues.
I invite you to join me at this display of signs and you can easily stand there and talk with people to discuss the issues.
Hope to see you out to demand a change that will lessen the impact of the climate emergency we are experiencing.
Why do I have UCP on this sign? Well, they form the present government in Alberta and like all previous Alberta governments (including the NDP) have pushed the fossil fuel agenda to the detriment of the planet while knowing what impacts their actions would have on people and planet.

January 21st, Sunday – Vegan Poetry Slam: “The Edmonton Vegan Activists we will be doing our first Vegan Poetry Slam!
Die Pie has generously given us their space to utilize as a Fundraising event for Farm Animal Rescue & Rehoming Movement – FARRM and the Edmonton Vegan Activists.
You MUST be vegan in order to read a poem. If you are too shy to read your poem, you can find someone of your choosing to read it for you. However keep in mind that one of the things you will be judged on is performance, so make sure that person “feels” your words and portrays those emotions when reading. This will give people from out of town an opportunity to have their words heard.
The winner will be chosen by the audience in a ballot form voting style, not by a show of hands.
The prize will be an assortment of goodies.
We will have 50/50’s so everyone has a chance to win a prize and we will have our first Auction! I will start to list them in January.
This is an event that hopes to bring together the community with good food, delicious music, laughter, and some more food. How can you go wrong?
If you would like to donate for the auction, register to read or have any questions or concerns, please reach out at : veganpoet1973@gmail.com”
Time: 5pm

January 24th, Wednesday – Homelessness: Prevention 101 with Stephen Gaetz: “In recent years, communities have been shifting their response to homelessness from a reliance on emergency services to a focus on preventing people from experiencing homelessness altogether.
But if we want to address homelessness through prevention, we must be clear on what this means. What systems changes and structural shifts could help to reduce someone’s risk of experiencing housing precarity? How can we ensure that people who have been homeless – and who are now housed – do not experience homelessness again? Ultimately, preventing homelessness cannot and should not be solely the responsibility of the homelessness sector.
In this webinar, join Stephen Gaetz, President and CEO of the Canadian Observatory on homelessness, for a discussion on what it means to prevent homelessness with examples from real-life success stories.
We also have a special announcement coming up, so be sure to stay until the end of the session!

January 24th, Wednesday – 101: How To Bankrupt Fossil Banks: “Join Tipping Point for a 101 introduction to organising around fossil banks.
Money from banks is the oxygen that keeps fossil fuels burning. Without banks’ willingness to give enormous loans to fossil fuel companies, new fossil fuel projects would be a thing of the past.
How To Bankrupt Fossil Banks is a workshop all about getting banks to stop financing the fossil fuel industry. We will talk about:
– Why targeting banks is so important,
– Why individual and organisational bank boycotts are crucial for bankrupting fossil banks, and
– How you can start your own bank boycott campaign.

January 24th, Wednesday – Introduction to the Palestinian Liberation Struggle (Part 1 of SURJ’s Intro to Anti-Racism Series): “ABOUT THE WORKSHOP: As Israel’s genocidal campaign on Gaza enters its fourth month, many are being mobilized in support of Palestinian liberation.
This workshop will introduce attendees to the background and root causes of the Palestine struggle, explain the role of racism, anti-Semitism, and Islamophobia, as well as provide insights into ways that people living here in Canada can contribute effectively to the movement for social justice and liberation. This workshop is facilitated by two wonderful organizers of the Palestinian Youth Movement, which has been the leading force in Canada (and elsewhere) mobilizing resistance to the genocide in Gaza.
ABOUT THE SERIES: Unlearning racism and learning how to be anti-racist is life-long work and life-long learning. This can be hard work, but it is also amazingly rewarding. To help facilitate this learning, Showing Up for Racial Justice-Toronto (SURJ) is hosting our annual mini-series on anti-racism. This is a three-part workshop series, roughly one per month. These workshops are not the be-all and end-all of anti-racism; they are designed to provide a solid foundation for people who are new to this kind of work, yet want to learn more and get more involved in the struggle for anti-racism and decolonization. No matter what stage you’re at in your learning, everyone is welcome.
We strongly encourage you to save the dates for Part 2 and Part 3 as well: Part 2 will be on February 28th from 6:00 – 8:00pm, with Kazu Haga, the renowned activist and author of Healing Resistance: A Radically Different Approach to Harm. Part 3 will be held in late March (date TBD) led by Indigenous activists including No More Silence, and focus on issues of Indigenous Sovereignty and decolonization.”

January 25th – The Uncharted Territory – mass deaths, how bad is it going to be?: “Time is up, we have reached uncharted territory. Our governments are continuing to commit to new fossil fuel, and refuse to charge the real criminal responsible for climate collapse. Scientists confirm that after decades of urging society to act and to take measures to avoid climate impact, we have run out of time: we are now living our fears. We see appalling floods in Libya, Kenya, Somalia, Pakistan, and Storm Henk in UK; fatal heatwaves in Brazil; devastating wildfires in Hawaii, Canada, Sicily, Greece; and much much more.
Climate change is real and it’s terrifying. Having always been focused on science and solutions, top scientists are now communicating the facts not only as data, but appealing to the emotions. Scientists increasingly see they have a moral responsibility to communicate honestly and emotionally, without being labelled an “alarmist”.
We are humans, with hearts and minds, and the scientific community is starting to open up to being vulnerable about the science. Dr William Ripple states: “The fearful framing of the report wasn’t strategic. They’re not trying to scare us. They’re just telling it as it is. Still, the nagging question lingers: Does being vulnerable about their fear make readers more likely to support the proposed policies? Will emotional appeal change hearts and minds? And is this the most efficient way to do so?”

This interactive workshop is not just a primer on the principles of solid strategy, but also a session meant to help participants find a balance between the desire for a collaborative, democratic decision making process and the need to focus and narrow down to create successful strategic goals.
This workshop was created because this topic has been requested often by climate justice organizers. The curriculum material was drawn from a collaboration between several senior movement thinkers including Amara Possian and Tom Liacas, and also draws on sources and wisdom from many other folks in the Momentum Training Community, Mobilisation Lab and Blueprints for Change.”

February 5th – 9th – International Week at the University of Alberta: “A warming globe, increasing numbers of refugees and displaced persons, gender disparity, economic inequalities, freshwater shortages, famine, war… We are bombarded with these issues and many others facing the planet and its inhabitants daily.
To address these issues, the UN established the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to be achieved by 2030. The Goals, adopted in 2015, call on governments and civil society worldwide to address the world’s most pressing issues, from poverty and education to health and the environment.
I-Week is a chance to hear international and local perspectives on global issues. On February 5-9, 2024, International Week speakers connected their work to the SDGs.
U of A’s annual International Week is an incubator of ideas and a source of inspiration for us to work together for a better world. Stay tuned for updates on I-Week 2024.

Start Planning for the Future

There are global days of action happening throughout the world. Edmonton can participate in these actions – all it takes is you.

  • 2024 YEG Winter Cycling Congress is happening in Edmonton this year: “Join us in February 2024 [22nd to 24th] for an unforgettable multi-day event filled with informative sessions, bicycle excursions, and a community of passionate winter cyclists. Discover new possibilities while exploring the cycling-friendly city of Edmonton. Don’t miss out on this unique opportunity to connect with fellow enthusiasts and learn from experts in the field.” [I think the “cycling -friendly” is a bit of a stretch – Michael].
You can register here. Early bird rate is only until September 30th, 2023 so if you want to save a bit of money because the 450$ could be a bit of a deterrent. Mind you, if you go as a representative of a non-profit group the cost is only 200$. Good time to step up as your Community League cycling advocate and representative.
  • Bye Nye the Science Guy is coming to Edmonton on March 2nd. “In his new live stage show, “The End Is Nye”, Bill Nye the Science Guy will be discussing climate change, natural disasters, and how we, all of us, can make the world a better place…with science! All delivered in the unique, hilarious, and fun way that only Bill Nye the Science Guy can.
Engineer, comedian, author, and inventor, audiences revere this good-natured Renaissance man’s infectious blend of humour, intellectual curiosity, and devotion to solving some of the world’s most complex challenges through science. You don’t want to miss this!”
Perhaps some group could use this event as a place to present local climate action to the crowd of people that will be showing up and not activists yet. I think his skit on John Oliver was brilliant and said it like it is.
  • The Decline and Fall of Western Civilization: Our Choice? April 12-13, 2024 in Red Deer. This is a right-wing ‘freedom’ fest. They are hosting climate change denier Dr. Patrick Moore and Maxime Bernier (People’s Party of Canada).
Others include: John Robson (columnist at Epoch Times and National Post), Michelle Stirling, Stockwell Day, Paul Hinman, Andrew Lawton, and Marc Morano (from Wikipedia – “founded and runs the website ClimateDepot.com… a US non-profit organisation that promotes climate change denial“. It is being sponsored by The Heinze Group.
[This event is only listed for reference in case anyone was interested in disruption and such].
